1. Indian Railways Berth Codes Decoded
Indian Railways uses standardized two-letter abbreviations printed on your e-ticket or chart:
LB (Lower Berth): Ground level in the main 6-berth bay. Best for seniors, tall travelers, and families with kids. Shared for daytime seating.
MB (Middle Berth): Sits between Lower and Upper. Folded down during daytime and must only be pulled up for sleeping between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM.
UB (Upper Berth): Top tier main berth. Complete privacy all day — you can sleep or read anytime without having to fold anything.
SL (Side Lower): Positioned along the side corridor next to the window. Converts from two daytime passenger seats into a single bed at night.
SU (Side Upper): Fixed single berth on the side corridor wall. Highly favored by solo travelers for privacy and uninterrupted rest.
SM (Side Middle): Exclusively found in 3E (AC 3-Tier Economy) and Garib Rath coaches. Placed between Side Lower and Side Upper.
2. The Bay Mathematics: How Coach Numbering Repeats
Every train coach is organized into modular compartments called bays. Within each coach class, the layout pattern repeats mathematically:
A. Sleeper (SL) & AC 3-Tier (3A) — 8 Berths per Bay
Every bay contains 8 berths (6 in the main cubicle + 2 on the side). To find your berth, divide your seat number by 8:
Remainder 1 or 4: Lower Berth (LB) — e.g., 1, 4, 9, 12, 17, 20, 25, 28, 41, 44
Remainder 2 or 5: Middle Berth (MB) — e.g., 2, 5, 10, 13, 18, 21, 26, 29, 42, 45
Remainder 3 or 6: Upper Berth (UB) — e.g., 3, 6, 11, 14, 19, 22, 27, 30, 43, 46
Remainder 7: Side Lower (SL) — e.g., 7, 15, 23, 31, 39, 47, 55, 63, 71
Remainder 0 (Divisible by 8): Side Upper (SU) — e.g., 8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48, 56, 64, 72
B. AC 2-Tier (2A) — 6 Berths per Bay (No Middle Berths)
AC 2-Tier coaches eliminate middle berths entirely for superior vertical headroom:
Remainder 1 or 3: Lower Berth (LB) — e.g., 1, 3, 7, 9, 13, 15, 19, 21
Remainder 2 or 4: Upper Berth (UB) — e.g., 2, 4, 8, 10, 14, 16, 20, 22
Remainder 5: Side Lower (SL) — e.g., 5, 11, 17, 23, 29, 35, 41, 47
Remainder 0 (Divisible by 6): Side Upper (SU) — e.g., 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48
IRCTC Official Sleeping Hours Rule
Under Indian Railways Rule GSR 836E, the official sleeping hours are 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM. During daytime (6:00 AM to 10:00 PM), middle berths must remain folded down, and lower berth passengers must allow upper and middle berth passengers to sit on the lower berth.
3. Which Berth is Best for You?
Every berth has its trade-offs depending on your travel style:
For Tall Passengers (> 5'10"): Choose regular Lower (LB) or Upper (UB) berths. They are roughly 6 feet 3 inches long. Avoid Side Lower (SL), which is slightly shorter (~6 feet) due to the folding split.
For Solo Travelers: Side Upper (SU) is undisputed king. You have your own window, charging plug, zero daytime folding arguments, and nobody walking past your bed.
For Senior Citizens & Pregnant Women: Always opt for Lower Berth (LB). Indian Railways also reserves an automatic Senior Citizen Quota for lower berths during reservation.
For Night Owls & Readers: Upper Berth (UB) allows you to keep reading, listen to music, or sleep at 3:00 PM without needing consensus from co-passengers.
4. The "End Bay" Reality: Why Bay 1 & Bay 9 Matter
Each coach has 9 bays. Bay 1 (Seats 1–8) and Bay 9 (Seats 65–72) sit directly adjacent to the coach vestibule doors, pantry corridors, and lavatories.
These end bays face more pedestrian traffic and occasional door bangs. If you prefer quiet and undisturbed sleep, middle bays (Bays 3 to 7, Seats 17 to 56) offer the quietest experience. TrainMate\'s Seat Finder automatically tags whether your seat is in an end bay or mid-coach.
